Letter to the Editor
Dear Editor:
Chris Taylor thinks that President Bush has a lower ethical standard than former White House resident Bill Clinton, who had the morals of an alley cat and the ethical standards of a mob boss. Our esteemed editor probably was not old enough to vote for Clinton much less understand that he was nothing more than a serial liar and adulterer who fairly brutalized this nation with his lack of character and abused the privilege of serving his country in his fruitful attempt to line his own pockets.
The Enron debacle is a business story and nothing more. Any attempt to make it into a political story is hubris. Bushs name has not popped up everywhere, and every attempt to connect him with Enron even in the most abstract of fashions has failed because the man has done nothing wrong. His mother-in-law lost several thousands of dollars of her own money in the scandal. If he were so deeply involved. would he have allowed that to happen? I think not.
As for the Vice Presidents involvement, there were no secret meetings with Enron executives. Meetings were held, but they fall under the legal everyday business of his office. Enron had been deeply involved in the development of energy resources in this country for many years. Texaco, Exxon and other companies regularly meet with members of Congress and with the President, Vice President and their staff and also contribute heavily to members of both parties.
Most appalling is the statement that if the president were doing his job, 9-11 would never have happened. This declaration is like saying that if the fire departments were doing their job, there would never be any fires, or if the police were doing their job, there would never be any crime.
The president is not omniscient. Our federal agencies have stopped or prevented dozens of terrorist attacks in the last several years. This is hardly an evil and cruel regime.
It is perhaps the first administration in my 50 years in which we have a man at the helm who says what he means and means what he says and has demonstrated the honesty and integrity to back it up. George Bush will go down in history as one of the great ones. As for Clinton, he will be left on the trash heap of Presidential duds.
