Contest offers milky future
Students can further their careers with milk.
Discoveries in Dairy Ingredients contest offers graduate and undergraduate students the opportunity to create new food using any form of dry milk, dry buttermilk, whey or whey derivatives.
Students can build resumes, develop food industry contacts and win cash.
Students must research and develop a new product. Included should be a product prototype and written report demonstrating food knowledge and HACCP procedures, as well as packaging and marketing ideas for the product.
Judging is based on use of dairy ingredients, originality, product appeal, marketability and feasibility.
Judges will be comprised of food scientists, ingredient suppliers and marketing and sales professionals in the dairy industry.
Entries are due by Feb. 1, 2002.
Top prize is $5,000 for Best Overall Product. Also included is $3,000 each for marketability and feasibility.
Past winners have been entries such as Tropical Jewels, a frozen dessert with nutraceutical properties, and Whey Krunchers, a high protein snack food for the sports nutrition market.
