Mobile unit to aid in cancer detection
by KC Jones. reporter
Detecting breast cancer in the early stages is important, so mammogram screening is coming to the NE, NW and South campuses.
Texas Womens Centers Mobile Mammography Program and health services will offer breast screenings for women 35 years and older, not pregnant, without breast implants and without breast symptoms.
The mobile units first stop is NE Campus, where it will be parked on the west side of the Student Center Tuesday, Feb. 20, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
Mammograms are performed by appointment only, so women who would like to have a mammogram should call 1-877-398-4888 to schedule an appointment.
All major insurance and Medicare will be filed, but if someone is not insured, the cost is $ 75.
For help researching ones insurance coverage, contact Tammy Middlebrooks at 817-336-9900.
Middlebrooks stresses the importance of early detection.
Breast cancer is now 99 percent curable if caught in the first stages, she said. Early detection is everything. Women need to be in tune with their body, performing self breast examinations at least once a month. It is also important to follow up with a clinical examination by a doctor once a year and have a yearly mammogram.
Mammogram results will be received within five to seven days. Written results will also be sent to ones physician. Participants must have their doctors name and address available when they call to make an appointment.
The Mobile Mammography Program will be on the NW Campus Tuesday, March 6, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and on South Campus Wednesday, Oct. 10, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
Women who have a family history of breast cancer or take hormone therapy like oral contraceptives may be at a higher risk.
