Two $500 scholarships are being offered to students enrolled in the Photo II course to central France.

The Photo II course, May 9-20, earns the student three credits and the experience of studying in the French countryside with Patricia Richards, NE Campus adjunct instructor.

Richards has been teaching at TCC since 1990.

She is a fine arts photographer whose work has appeared in many books including A New Life, Stories and Photos from the Suburban South, Feels like Home and, most recently, In Their Mother’s Eyes.

“The class is designed for advanced photography students and will emphasize documentary style photography.

“The student will learn, understand and feel the experiences of people unknown to them by making visual records of people and things unrelated to themselves,” she said.

The course consists of group discussions, lectures, galleries, churches and cathedrals and trips to art museums. There will be time for both group and solo shooting.

The course will include a lot of walking, and high participation is expected, Richards said. Students will also be required to keep a journal to practice expressing what they encountered during the course.

Students will stay on a private estate in an 18th-century stone home and refurbished mill located seven kilometers from Montoire.

Located in the fertile valley of the Loire River, the students will be surrounded by ancient ruins, chateaux and small churches with    multi-colored frescoes, Richards said.

“History, art, architecture and the opportunity to make incredible photographs await each student,” she said.

Photography in France will provide a rich experience full of local history and folklore, Richards said.

The course cost of $2,900 plus tuition and fees, includes airfare, transportation by van, accommodations, continental breakfasts, seven dinners, a gourmet lunch in Lavardin, admission and entry fees, guest speaker and fees and chemistry for black and white film development.

The class is limited to 12 students, and a deposit of $400 must be paid at business services by Friday, March 8. Deadline for the $500 scholarship entry is March 1.

Interested students must submit a 10-print portfolio and letter expressing why they should be considered.

Film Depot is sponsoring the scholarships and will review the applications.

Non-credit photography workshops with a similar format will be

held June 12-20 and again June 23-30 for $1,850 excluding airfare.

The participants will be responsible for transportation to and from the 18th century estate.

Each workshop is limited to 10 participants.

Additional information is available from Richards at 972-596-4714 or pdrhome@onramp.net or from Richard Doherty, NE photographic study center, at 817-515-6618.
