Texas politician to speak on NE Campus
NE Campus student services has invited a motivational speaker for the Diez y Seis de Septiembre celebration, Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 12:30 p.m. in the Student Center Corner.
Victor Morales, Texas politician, speaks on civic responsibility, overcoming obstacles, breaking down barriers, courtesy and respect, leadership skills and volunteerism. He encourages citizens to be informed and offers advice on running for office and voting.
Although Morales came from a poor background and a broken family, he attained political success.
Morales believes not having a network of powerful friends is not an excuse.
In 1996, Morales was the first minority to become a U.S. Senate nominee from either major party defeating three seasoned politicians for the nomination.
He did not have a staff and had only $15,000 to work with. The other politicians had a half million dollars each.
He believes power came to him by being courteous and respectful.
Morales also talks about leadership skills and volunteerism.
We can all lead in our own way, and we must give back to our community, he said.
Morales says he often teaches students the power of education, to believe in themselves and to contribute to others in their communities.
Morales has offered to speak to several classes and is particularly interested in government classes.
Interested professors should contact Dr. Paula Vastine-Norman or Lou Davenport, 817-515-6644, to schedule his visit.
The 12:30 p.m. presentation will be co-sponsored by the Organization of Latin and American Students.
