NE basketballers start games
by Nick Nance, reporter

Intramural basketball began last week on NE Campus with a double-header.

In the first game, the Mavs beat AA Boys 46-35 in a game that almost did not get played.

Some AA Boys players arrived late for the game, causing frustration for their teammates before the game even started.

When play began, AA Boys started out slowly, struggling to make a shot and allowing the Mavs to get out to an early lead.

Brian Rogers stepped up mid-way through the first half to give the Mavs much needed leadership.

Rogers also provided some solid rebounding and scoring.

He led the Mavs to victory with 18 points.

Directed by Michael Goree, who led the game with 19 points, AA Boys made a strong finish to the half.

The team was trailing only 29-24 at halftime, but fell behind in the second half to lose to the Mavs.

In game two of the double header, the Shooters showed heart as they came back late to win 44-41 over the Patricks.

Both teams struggled early because of poor passing and poor shot selection.

At halftime, the Patricks had a 17-14 lead.

Marlon Beach hit a key three-point shot early in the second half to keep the Patricks from getting down.

The Shooters proved to be too much to handle in the second half.

Led by Jake Holmes’ game high 25 points, the Shooters withstood the late charge by the Patricks Patrick Brown, who had 11 points late in the half.

The Shooters were down by one point with less than 20 seconds left when a rebound by Terry Jones was tipped in.

Jones’ only points of the game came with the game-winning shot that fell with two seconds left.

The Patricks took a quick time out to make an effort at a last shot.
They inbounded the ball at half court, where it was stolen and passed to Alton Evans, who put in a last shot to ensure the Shooters victory.

Intramural basketball is continuing this week in the HPE Building.
