Charity needs turkeys
The Salvation Army of Tarrant County needs 250 turkeys for Thanksgiving dinner by Thursday, Nov. 21.
An increase in needed services resulted from the disposal of over 150,000 pounds of food from the Metroplex Food Bank.
To avoid a $25,000 fine, the food bank was forced to dump frozen turkeys, beef and chicken because of a faulty freezer compressor that caused the storing temperature to go above that legally allowed.
Consequently, the Salvation Army has seen a rise in the number of requests for service, now averaging 10 per day, with the family sizes ranging from five to 10.
Serving over 3,600 meals last year during Thanksgiving and expecting to serve more this year, the Salvation Army needs non-perishable food items and canned foods in addition to the turkeys.
