The sixth annual Women In New Roles (WIN-R) art show, Journey to a Silver Dawn, opened last week with nearly 40 artists sharing their work in the Carillon Gallery on South Campus.

The exhibit features sculptures in terra cotta, button art, drawings in colored pencil and charcoal, textiles, paintings and music.

Latasha Henderson, WIN-R student, has several pieces influenced by African art.

“I like using brown and orange, and there is a lot of it in African art,” she said.

Gena Kelly, student, has not yet taken art classes at TCC.

“The exhibit is nice; I had no idea what to expect,” she said.

Teronna Bowden said her piece is about an abusive relationship.

“I try to represent what women are going though so they can come to reality and get the strength to move on,” she said.

Aleta Chavez painted a portrait of her children and a self-portrait.

“Everything you do says so much about you,” she said.

Glenda Bradley, another student, said, “My works concern feminine energy, unified by a common theme of change, spiritual growth, evolution and transformation,”

The show celebrates the 25th anniversary of the WIN-R program, designed to assist women in the transition of returning to school.

Journey to a Silver Dawn runs through Nov. 7 Monday-Thursday, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. The gallery also will be open following the WIN-R anniversary banquet Friday, Oct. 25.
