NE writers honored at literary reception

Creative writers were honored at NE Campus earlier this month.

Under the Clock Tower, a publication with poems, essays and short stories by NE Campus writers, was unveiled in a reception Oct.11.

“We appreciate your effort and want to show our appreciation in this way,” Dr. Antonio Howell, English department chair, said.

Students, who had sent in submissions to the English department for the fall and spring writing competitions, finally saw their work in print.

The contributing writers saw the reception as an honor, with many of them having to travel a few hundred miles to attend and read their work before a live audience.

Elaine Walton, one of the contributing writers to this year’s edition, traveled from Alabama.

Cuyler Etheredge, assistant professor of English and journal editor, said that the goal of the journal and of the English department is to encourage creative writing among TCC students—not just those who are enrolled in English.

Walton, whose poem You a big man now was read at the reception, agrees with the competition’s being open to all students.

“I was finishing my degree in Spanish when I saw the advertisement in the Spanish department for submissions. I typed up some poems I had been working on and submitted them,” she said.

Under the Clock Tower is an annual journal that gets its work from NE Campus creative writers through the writing competitions.

The fall writing competition has already started and is open for submissions until Nov. 11. Manuscripts can be submitted to the English department in FAC 336 or the writing center in ACB 109.
