NW scheduling counseling sessions for self-enrichment
by Meredith Waites, reporter

To aid students, the NW Campus counseling center will present personal enrichment workshops in several areas.

These workshops are designed to help students achieve greater personal and/or career awareness.

Students can attend 12 different workshops from Sept. 25 to Oct. 18 in C-112 at designated times.

According to Larry Kimble, counselor and presenter, these workshops are presented each semester and have been a part of the campus for the past 16 years.

The ideas for the workshops generally come from feedback from students.

The variety of workshops is important because different things will appeal to different people, Kimble said.

Math Anxiety? will be presented Wednesday, Sept. 25, at 12:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to assist students with anxiety related to mathematics and test taking.

Math is one course many TCC students have a problem with, and seminars such as this have been extremely successful on all campuses, Kimble said.

Presented by Edna Greenwood, associate professor of math, students can learn some guidelines to achieving confidence in their test-taking skills with mathematics.

This workshop will help students become less stressed when taking math exams.

To develop better career-oriented skills, Résumé, Do you have one? Is it current? teaches students how to build a stronger résumé to assist them in obtaining jobs. The résumé is the most important aspect to consider when applying for a job, according to seminar information.

LuAnn Krey, career and employment services coordinator, will present this topic Wednesday, Oct. 9, at 12:30 p.m.

The workshop shows the importance of producing an attractive résumé.

Students can attend Power, Attraction, Seduction to learn about themselves in relationships.

Students can learn the power they have in relationships and how their personality traits influence their relationships.

They will also learn what seduces them and whether opposites attract.

Presented by Dr. Shelly Cavin, special services coordinator, this workshop, held on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 12:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., will tie one’s personality type into these areas.

The counseling center will sponsor more workshops this semester.

Personal-focused workshops include Depression and Anxiety, Self Talk: What do you say when you talk to yourself?, How to Fall Out of Love, Stress/ Road Rage — How to Survive? and Alcohol Awareness: Experience Fatal Vision.

Workshops dealing with career-oriented and scholastic issues include The Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI), Testing and Study Skills, Take Command of Your Computer and Nutrition and Educational Stress.

Any additional information on these workshops can be obtained through the counseling center.

Six counselors are currently on staff to assist students at the NW Campus. Individual counseling is also available if needed.
