October named as awareness time for handicapped

Since 1988, Congress has designated October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

During this month, Americans with disabilities are recognized in the workforce for their skills, talent and dedication. The Office of Disability Employment Policy plans activities and materials for the public’s awareness.

According to the Denton County MHMR Center, programs during October highlight employment barriers that still need to be opened. Examples include improving employment opportunities, expanding government services and regulating public accommodations.

The effort to educate the American public about the disability and employment issues began in 1945. Congress enacted a law declaring the first week in October National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week.

Congress expanded the week into a month in 1988, renaming it.
