Campuses schedule orientation sessions
To aid new students and introduce them to college, each campus has developed orientation sessions.
New students at NE Campus are required to attend an advisement session before registering. The sessions last about two hours.
According to Dr. Van Parker, dean of student development and educational services, the sessions are highly concentrated. Students will be given information on registration, calculating GPA, TASP test requirements, planning courses and balancing work and schedule, as well as helpful numbers and services that are available on campus.
NW Campus will offer many orientation sessions beginning Aug.1 in the Optimum Room. The orientation will last approximately one hour. First time college students are required to attend one session prior to testing or advisement.
Students will present their orientation voucher to an advisement session with a counselor. For more information, call NW student activities at 817-515-7795.
South Campus counseling center hopes to familiarize students with campus offerings. Students new to college are required to attend the New Student Orientation.
The session holds a wealth of information including academic department information and available student services such as financial aid, the career center, counseling and testing. Students will be aided with degree plans, assessments and everything they need from start to finish, according to Dr. Lonzetta Smith-Allen, director of counseling.
Students can expect to familiarize themselves with district resources as well as those available on campus, Freddie Sandifer, academic advisor, said.
Resources, like the Center for Academic Success, will be introduced so that if a student begins to have trouble, he or she will know where to go, Sandifer said.
In a crisis, students will know what to do to avoid academic suspension or probation, he said.
The New Student Orientation will be held Thursday, June 27, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. in the SUB Living Room.

Orientations for incoming students on SE Campus are changing to be more convenient.
The school wanted the orientation to be part of the registration process. After a student registers and goes to the business services office, then a 15-minute orientation will follow, Rusty Fox, SE dean of student development and educational services, said.
Seven orientations will be conducted daily July 29-August 26. A simple PowerPoint presentation will introduce students to the basics of campus life, Fox said.
The majority of orientation still remains with fundamental course instructors because students retain more information in a classroom learning environment, Fox said.
In addition, monthly workshops are planned for fall semester in notetaking, stress management and better study habits, Fox said.
