Overcrowding relief just a building away
By Laura Vatalaro

A three-sectioned temporary building currently under construction on SE Campus should be completed by October of this year.
“The building is three module units: one large module in the center and two smaller modules on the outside,” Danny Voss, plant superintendent at SE Campus, said. “There will be seven large continuing education classrooms, a math testing area, a counseling testing area that will be used primarily for TASP testing and an area for the graphics program.”
“Traffic on the intercampus drive should not be affected by the construction, but students should always be cautious while driving near the construction site,” he said.
“The construction will cause somewhat of a traffic problem, but hopefully, it will be minimal. Service and delivery trucks will always be passing through the construction area,” Voss said. “Student parking, however, should not be affected.”
So far, only physical education students have had to adjust because they use the area currently under construction for golf, football and soccer.
“The best thing for students to do is to be cautious and stay clear of the construction site,” he said.
Plans for more construction are on the drawing board for the spring. A new art building will be built directly north of the current temporary building construction.
Derrick White, art teacher at SE, said, “The art annex will be approximately 10,000 square feet and will be used for the ceramic and sculpture department. It should be complete by the spring of 2001.”
Currently, no plans have been made for constructing a new parking lot despite the temporary overflow lot that was constructed at the beginning of the fall semester in the vacant field on the east side of the main building.
Lt. Eddie Thompson, SE Campus police, said, “The overflow lot was closed Friday, Sept. 8. Usually during registration, there are a lot more students enrolled and on campus. Once registration has come to an end, there are usually less students, so there will no longer be a need for the overflow parking.”
