Counselors plan workshops
by Lauren Crider, nw news editor

The NW Campus counseling department is sponsoring workshops to help students with issues.

Susie Olmos-Soto, academic advisor, will present the workshop, Domestic Violence: Myths, Facts and Help Wednesday, Feb. 13.

In the past, domestic violence was something no one spoke about. It was a personal issue, which people believed was best left alone.
Presently, domestic violence is a large issue that is often addressed. However, many falsehoods exist about the subject.

The workshop will address some myths of domestic violence and focus on the facts.

When a friend or loved one is involved in domestic violence, it is sometimes difficult to know how to handle the situation, Olmos-Soto said.

   Olmos-Soto will make her presentation twice: 12:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. in C-112.

Some workshops include information of a less personal nature.

Sandra McCurdy, assistant director of library services, will lecture on the library Thursday, Feb. 14, at 12:30 p.m. in C-112.

Students usually use the library when studying or preparing for a paper. Many realize the materials available but are not sure of how to find it or what resources to use.

They often forget that their most helpful resource is the librarian.

Many times a librarian can either immediately advise on a resource or quickly look up information on resources for the confused student.

Who Needs a Librarian will discuss the advantages of this overlooked, yet most helpful resource.

Study habits can also be a big concern for students. Sometimes all that is needed is information on how to study or what tools might help.

LASSI is an assessment instrument, which uses 10 scales to measure student success. The program assesses motivation, anxiety and test strategies.

On Friday Feb. 15, at 12:30 p.m., Jim Sherwood, assistant professor of psychology and NW counselor, will present the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI) workshop.

Participants will complete the test and will be provided with the results. Then they will receive information on ways to improve their study habits based on the 10 scales.

All students can attend any of the workshops scheduled through February in C-112 on the NW Campus.
