Doctors should know which medicines or supplements are safe for women to take during or after pregnancy.
The Council on Family Health also suggests that expectant mothers should take the time to read each label carefully.
Certain medicines and supplements may have adverse risks and can be passed from the mother to her unborn child.
The same warning is issued when mothers are nursing.
Medicines or supplements that are suitable for an adult woman may harm her unborn or nursing baby.
Doctors may suggest mothers take iron supplements or prenatal vitamins during or after pregnancy.
Adding folic acid to a womans diet prior to and during pregnancy has been shown to reduce the chances of certain birth defects.
It is important that the lines of communication are open between a mother and her healthcare professional, the council advises.
