SE Campus Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) chapter is honoring students for their academic achievements this fall by inducting new members in its biannual ceremony.

PTK, the national honor society for two-year colleges, offers members access to numerous scholarships, Molly Wolfenberger, SE PTK president, said.

“I want to give the new students the opportunity for scholarships, to get involved in the community through the community service projects we do, meet new people, network and make new contacts.

“PTK travels a lot, and we get to meet people all over the country. We’ve traveled to Lubbock and North Carolina. In April, we’re going to Anaheim, Calif. Because of PTK, you get to meet prominent people all over the United States,” she said.

The induction ceremony is Tuesday, Oct. 15, at 7 p.m. in the North Ballroom.

Hospitality and dietetics students are preparing the food and refreshments.

Trey Collins, vice-president of leadership and other PTK officers, who will be involved in the ceremony, discussed the importance of joining PTK and the impact the induction ceremony had on them during the previous semesters.

“I remember that everyone at the ceremony made me feel very welcome.

“I didn’t even know the campus president, Dr. Carrier, and she spoke with me during the ceremony and made me feel like part of the school,” he said.

The ceremony is very formal and inviting, Collins said. The student officers lead the new members in the PTK pledge among other things and everyone holds a candle, lighting their neighbor’s in a sign of fellowship.

Vicki Hall, vice president of fellowship, said the induction also gives the students and teachers a forum outside of class to speak and build strong academic relationships.

“The teachers congratulated me and told me how proud they were. It showed me that they cared about my education,” she said.

Rachael McDonald, executive assistant to the president concurred.

“PTK’s induction made me feel like part of the academic community. It really enhances the community college experience,” she said.

PTK faculty sponsor and faculty organizer for the induction is instructor Patricia Clough. For more information, contact Clough at 817-515-3769.
