Seniors display artistic talent

The first annual TCC Senior Spring Art Fling, coordinated by Gene Cahill, will run through Friday, April 16, in the Student Center’s Center Corner on NE Campus.

The show features many varieties of watercolor, acrylic, oil and photographic art by senior citizens from all four campuses.

One artist, Kathy Braun, described herself as a realist who uses color to express the mood and emotion of her paintings.

Kerrell B. Maze, another realist, said he portrays bright and colorful scenes of different ethnic societies around the world.

Cahill, who teaches art and writing courses on NE Campus, thought up the idea of holding an art show from her past experiences.

Cahill has traveled the world and achieved many degrees, including some from the University of Washington.

While living in Maryland several years ago, Cahill taught her son and her neighbor’s daughter how to paint and draw. She opened her first art gallery in her basement, calling it Gene’s Art Cellar.

Cahill said she is happy with the turnout of entries this year.

“The ones who entered their paintings are very serious about their art. It’s really good,” she said.

The art show does not have a judge this year, but Cahill said she is already in the process of acquiring one for next year’s show.

Not only is she avid about holding a second Senior Spring Art Fling, she expressed her gratitude to the NE Campus for giving the seniors an opportunity to display their art work.
