South advisors say success achieved by setting goals

Making the right choices and setting goals are the two major components of success, according to advisors

who spoke on The ABC’s of Success recently on South Campus.
The interactive seminar was sponsored by the STARS program, which was established to help at-risk students.

The seminar was presented by Sharron Crear, interim director, and Dennis Lee, academic advisor of the program.

Crear discussed the importance of making decisions, both large and small.

“Everything in life is a choice—absolutely everything,” she said.

Crear talked about the power of everyday choices and lectured about the overall effect these choices can have.

“Each choice can take you either toward your goal in life or away from your heart’s desire,” she said.

Crear asked students at the seminar to think about what they valued most in life.

She said people always tend to invest time in those things which they value.

“All of our decisions are based on values,” she said.

Crear warned students about the dangers of making impulse decisions.

She reminded students that each decision is accompanied by a consequence, either bad or good.

Lee talked about the importance of setting goals.

“Winners in life set goals and follow through on these goals; unsuccessful people just let life happen,” he said.

Lee said all goals must be SMART: Specific, Measurable, Action-oriented, Realistic and within a Time frame.

“Goal setting creates motivation and gives a sense of accomplishment,” he said.

Lee taught the special powers of the Six P’s.

He stated that goals must be positive, present tense, personal, precise, possible and powerful.

The seminar concluded with students, divided into groups, making brief presentations of what was learned at the seminar.
