Souths shift in structure implemented
by Tiffany Davis, south news editor
South Campus implemented a reorganization of the divisions during summer 2000.
The campus is regrouping some of the departments in an effort to achieve equality in the size and work load of the divisions, Jo Bagley, dean of students, said.
We expect the reorganization to allow the expertise of the division chair to line up more directly with the programs, Bagley said as she contrasted the past structure and pointed out the advantages in the new plan.
Some departments have changed divisions. The careers division, under Larry Edwards, acting chair, has become business and science, retaining accounting, business, and computer science while gaining natural sciences and mathematics.
Under the direction of Jim Moore, the health and sciences division is now health and technology. It retained health, physical education and nursing and took in automotives, electronics, engineering and air conditioning.
Formerly, there were three departments in the humanities division; it has increased to five departments.
In humanities we had some departments that were very large in comparison to others. We found that by spreading the departments out, we could receive better contact between the department chairs and the faculty, Bagley said. The changes gave the humanities division what it needed: more knowledge and more experience, she said.
Although Judith Gallagher is the new humanities division chair, there were no physical changes within the departments, Bagley said.
According to Bagley, students should not experience any difficulties.
If students have concerns or need some help, they can still go to their faculty or department chair, she said.
Reorganization is something that you have to keep going back and checking to make sure everything is going well. So far the changes seem to be working just fine, Bagley said.
