Shooters unbeaten in NE b-ball action
by Nick Nance, reporter
Intramural basketball teams on NE Campus have completed regular season play; playoffs begin today.
The Patricks were hot throughout the weeks first game against the Make-ups. The Patricks crushed any hope of victory the Make-ups had and beat them 67-39.
At halftime, The Patricks were up by 13, but teamwork by Nick Nance and Daron Anderson got the Make-ups within six points in the second half. That was the closest the score would ever be.
The depth and hustle of The Patricks was too much for the five-man roster of the Make-ups to handle. The Make-ups looked tired and worn out midway through the second half.
The Make-ups only scoring came when Nance would hook up with Anderson on full-court passes for easy lay-ups.
Darin Pinto led both teams in scoring with 20 points. Anderson and Nance were the leading scorers on the Make-ups with combined scoring of 32 points in the game.
On Wednesday, the Shooters improved their perfect record to 3-0 with a 58-56 victory over The Patricks. Solid play and the depth of the Shooters were too much for The Patricks.
The Shooters struggled early in the game to make easy baskets, and The Patricks took advantage and led 27-25 at halftime.
Amos McCluney came out on fire after halftime. He added 15 of his team-high 19 points in the second half. He hit key three-point shots to keep the Shooters in the game when they were down by 12 points late in the game.
The Shooters ended the game with a 14-1 run to come back and win. DaSean Durham of The Patricks led both teams in scoring with 20 points.
Fridays game included more running of the mouth than playing of basketball. It started out with a forfeit by the AA Boys. They did not have enough players to even begin the game.
In the later game, Invasion played the Mavs. Technical fouls early in the second half on a fouled-out member of Invasion almost ended the game. The game did not appear to be enjoyed by either team as tempers were flaring.
However, the dispute was resolved and the game finished with Invasion toping the Mavs 70-55.
The Invasions Jayson Smith was too much for the Mavs to stop as he scored 33 points.
Brian Rogers did his best to lead the Mavs to victory as he added 14 points to their cause.
The Shooters stayed undefeated this season punishing the Make-ups 62-34 in Mondays action.
Hot from the start, the Shooters posted a 10-0 lead in the first few minutes. On the other side of the ball, the Make-ups struggled to play as a team and make a basket.
Poor passes, lack of hustle and inattention killed all hopes the Make-ups had of winning. At halftime, the Shooters led 21-15.
When the second half began, it looked as if the Make-ups would come back.
Quick scoring by the Shooters Jacob Holmes and David Martin put the Shooters in the drivers seat. Together they totaled 45 of the Shooters 62 points.
Holmes scores 18 of his 28 points in the second half; Martin added eight of his own.
Argyle Woodruff added a spark for the Make-ups in the second half scoring eight of his 11 points. However, it was not enough.
