by Diana De Leon, reporter
The Day to Shine Event presented by the Battered Womens Foundation will reinforce self-esteem and provide a day of activities for families and victims of abuse.
The Saturday, Feb. 2, event is sponsored by the New Church at 7300 Smithfield Road in North Richland Hills from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Mary Lee Hafley, executive director of Womens Shelter, will be the featured speaker.
Moms will be treated to a spa day of sorts with a makeover, haircut, manicure and special lunch, all provided free. They will also be able to shop for free clothes at the clothing facility of the Battered Womens Foundation (BWF).
The children will be treated to a day filled with events planned especially for them. A kid-friendly lunch will also be provided. Previous childrens events have included bowling and a visit to a nearby park.
The BWF staff along with professional hairstylists, manicurists and makeup artists will devote the day to pampering moms and making them feel special.
The Day to Shine Event is held on the first Saturday of every month at various churches in Tarrant County and is just one of the services offered by the BWF.
A non-profit organization, BFW is one of only three long-term help facilities in the area. The program offers emergency needs such as shelter, food and clothing as well as referrals, job training, computer classes and furniture for families in need.
The BWF stays in a womans life for up to two years.
The Battered Womens Foundation helps abused families start their lives over in a safe environment. As part of this help, the BWF has apartments in the area where rent and deposits have been lowered for families in need.
The BWF stocks the kitchen with pots, pans, dishes, utensils and enough food for three months. The foundation also provides furniture and clothing for the entire family.
Counseling, a college program and help with job searches are just some of the services the Battered Womens Foundation offers.
Donations of clothing, furniture and other items can be made at 9125 Rumfield Rd.
