Students win scholarships in bowls
by Carlos Raigosa, editor-in-chief
A broad knowledge of virtually every subject taught at TCC and current events was needed when students competed in the third annual College Bowl on NE and NW campuses.
South Campus students square off tomorrow in the Forum Room of the Student Center from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Each campus contest has students battling for scholarships of $400 per team.
Teams of four compete against each other in a question/answer format.
We searched for those students who excel academically, Lou Davenport, NE coordinator of student activities, said. But, anyone was welcome to sign up and was eligible for the scholarship prizes.
NE Campus held its competition last week with the X-Men, a team of radiology students, beating out the Astros, a team from the astronomy club, for first place at the campus competition.
Steve Curry, Joe Griffith, Steve Comer and Gary Hetrick each received a $100 scholarship for winning the competition.
Apocalypse Now won the NW Campus competition.
The team was made up of Brian Cervantes, Richard Baker, Rett Wilmont, Russell Roberts and Laura Foster, also winners of scholarships.
The winning teams from each campus will compete Tuesday, Nov. 28, in a battle for the title of TCC Champions, Vesta Wheatly, NW Campus director of student activities, said.
A regional tournament in San Antonio will be later this year. Teams from Louisiana, Texas and Arkansas will compete.
SE Campus did not hold a College Bowl competition.
