Collegian wins top excellence in competition
Earlier this month, The Collegian staff participated in the Texas Community College Journalism Association (TCCJA) conference in Kilgore.
During the awards banquet, The Collegian won recognition in several categories in its division, including first in overall excellence.
Reporter Tina Sanchez won third place for sports photo of a South Campus student practicing judo. Sports editor, Paul Matson, won first and third in the picture page category for his coverage of the Deaf Heritage Day celebration on NW Campus and of the Texas Wild! exhibit at the Fort Worth Zoo.
Becky Woods, former photo editor, won second place in the news photo category for her picture of children singing during a Black Heritage Month presentation.
Annette Germinario won third place in feature writing for her article on 102-year-old student William Howard Pierson, and Raphael Elizalde won second place for his editorial cartoon on cloning.
The Collegian as a staff won three awards: third in headline writing, first in layout for the April 18 newspaper and Honorable Mention in advertising.
Shannon Harrison, managing editor, won Honorable Mention in news writing for her story on a NE students abduction last semester.
KC Jones and Kristen Barney won second place in advertising.
Chris Taylor, editor, won first place in editorial writing.
Chris Taylor, Shannon Har-rison, Michael Kraft, Paul Matson and Maria Carter received Honorable Mention for their series on TCCs specialty courses.
The Collegian tied for first with San Antonio College in general excellence.
TCCJA is an annual event held during the fall semester.
