Center leads South students toward academic successes
by Mary Barrera, south news editor
Academic achievements have been sought and found at South Campus center for academic success.
I have had success with two students who were struggling in pre-algebra and passed with an A and a B, Ana Kinninmonth, tutor and nursing student, said.
The center was designed with the student in mind.
The center for academic success is in the business of serving students, Lisa Evans, instructional assistant, said. We find out what the student needs, and then help to meet that need.
The center has many offerings.
The computers are the main draw, Evans said. Students can check their e-mail, do research on the Internet, type papers or use the centers instructional programs.
We have a learning and study skills assessment to help students realize their strengths and weaknesses, and we instruct them on how to study better, Dr. Lonzetta Smith-Allen, director of counseling, said.
Tutoring is set up by appointment to fit the students schedule.
One great benefit is that students do not have to pay for tutoring, Kinninmonth said.
Students who come to the center for help seemed pleased with the atmosphere and the results.
I like it a lot, Terry Graham, nursing student, said. There is a lot of hands-on attention; I get more information and my grades have improved.
The center also provides a textbook lending program, in which students are allowed to use a textbook in the center.
It is a great program for students who cannot afford to buy a textbook in the beginning of the semester, Smith-Allen said.
Located in ACB 170, the center is open Monday-Thursday 8:30 a.m.-9 p.m. and Friday 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.
