NE group celebrates contributors to black history

The Union for Cultural Diversity (UCD) on NE Campus will celebrate Black History Month with a tribute to the achievements of African-Americans.

The UCD will honor a small group of African-Americans who have changed the world Thursday, Feb. 22, at 7 p.m. in the Student Center’s Center Corner.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Maya Angelou, Booker T. Washington, Harriet Tubman, Michael Jordan, Colin Powell and Malcolm X are some of the individuals who have been selected.

UCD members believe these African-Americans fit one philosopher’s description of success: “Greatness is learned and available to virtually everyone willing to pay the price.”

As part of the tribute, the Mount Horuhm Youth Gospel Choir of Missionary Baptist Church in Fort Worth will sing gospel selections.

The program will also include a talent showcase by Dr. Murray Fortner, professor of English, and a presentation on the accomplishments of black America by Amos McCluney, counselor and instructor of psychology.

UCD’s goal is to promote unity, love and success within different ethnic groups at TCC.

The UCD offers students a way to socialize with people from various backgrounds.

One of the organization’s aims is to a challenge its members not only to share intellectual ideas but to become conscientious students with leadership skills.

The organization also promotes excellence in academics, social and cultural awareness and advancement and success for student members.

The program is open to all interested in attending.

Students who would like more information about the organization call McCluney at 817-515-6534 or Fortner at 817-515-6964.
