Area walk to benefit United Negro Fund
College students will benefit financially as well as physically from a walk to raise scholarship funds. The United Negro College Fund will hold its 11th Tarrant County Walk for Education Saturday, March 1, in downtown Fort Worth and will include the Fort Worth Water Gardens and Sundance Square. Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. The walk itself will begin promptly at 9 a.m. Adults and children are both encouraged to participate. A $25 registration fee for adults and $5 for children will help the UNCF reach its goal of $50,000. Adults who enter the race will be accepting pledges in their name to benefit the UNCF. The walker who raises the most money will win a grand prize of two roundtrip tickets from American Airlines to anywhere in the United States. Other prizes include a UNCF leather bomber jacket and an exclusive UNCF briefcase. To be eligible to win prizes, all money must be submitted no later than March 1. The UNCF will be using all proceeds to benefit minority scholarships to the 39 UNCF member schools. The goal is to provide students with a Christian education and allow them opportunities they might not have otherwise. Several women from TCC serve as committee chairs for this event. Annie Dobbins, a counselor at the South Campus, and Jeneen Smith-Robinson, assistant coordinator of special projects, will offer their time and help. Erma Johnson-Hadley, vice chancellor of administration, serves as honorary chair. Donations from those who choose not to participate in the walk can be sent to the Fort Worth Black Chamber of Commerce, 1150 South Freeway, Suite 211, Fort Worth, Texas 76104. For volunteer information as well as information about making pledges and early registration, contact Derrick Payne at the North Texas office of the UNCF at metro 972-263-4114. |
