Advisor to discuss communication techniques
by Brian Wainstein, Reporter

Everyone can benefit from the NE counseling services lecture series, an academic advisor said.

Communications and motivation are the topics of the second lecture, Feb. 10, 12:30-1:50 p.m., in College Hall, CAB 112.

Communication/Motivation will focus on what students want to achieve and the lengths they should go to for their results.

Often, some students find that, despite their dreams and craving for a degree, they are achieving poorly and the gap between what they want and what they do to achieve their desires is wider than they thought and still widening, Sonja Butler, academic advisor, said.

"The lecture will address these issues and provide students with usable tools to achieve and measure their results. Students will be encouraged to set concrete goals they can separate into readily achievable goals," she said.

"Everyone can use this information. There's no one in this world who, in the course of their daily lives, whether student or businessman, does not ask themselves, 'Who am I? What do I want, and what am I willing to do for it?' " she said.

Communication, with oneself and others, is another focus of the lecture, Butler said.

"Communication is not necessarily always verbal," she said. "You reflect your peers. If your friends aren't driven to succeed and are content to just exist, it [that same attitude] will be reflected in you."

Self-talk, the continuous self-evaluation in a person's mind, will be discussed. Butler said students will be warned of the dangers of self-deception and be encouraged always to tell themselves the truth.

If students are not performing to their satisfaction, they will be encouraged to question why, to evaluate themselves and to accept life changes, Butler said.
