Goals, preparation equal success

(KRT) Here are a few tips to help you get started on the right foot with a new exercise routine and to exercise safely... Remember that no matter what you'll be doing, it's a good idea to talk to your doctor first.

RUNNING

  • Make sure you're wearing the right shoes. The best way to find the shoe for you is to go to a specialty running store.
  • For women, a good sports bra is crucial. The fit of the band that goes across the ribcage and underneath the breasts is the most important measure of support. You'll want the band to be as snug around your ribs as you can stand, but not restrictive to breathing.
  • When you're running, run against traffic so you can see cars.
  • Avoid running on sidewalks, which can put a lot of stress on the joints. Run on a track, if you can, or on the street or the grass.
  • Wearing headphones when running on the street can make you vulnerable to being attacked or hit by a car. Save them for the gym or track.

BIKING

  • If your bike has been sitting unused in the corner of the garage for the past year, it's a good idea to take it to a bike shop, where professionals can evaluate it for safety.
  • Always ride with traffic or ride in parks such as Sesquicentennial State Park; avoid cars altogether.
  • Purchase a bike helmet and wear it every time you go riding.
  • Talk to biking experts at local bike shops to help you set goals for riding.
