History celebration to feature recruiting

As part of Black History month, the SE Campus will hold the Historically Black College and University Recruiting Fair Wednesday Feb. 5, 9-1a.m. for all students.

This is the first time that TCC has sponsored such an event for students searching for just the right college to pursue their academic career, Steven Smith, interim coordinator of student activities on SE, said.

"This is a great opportunity for college and university awareness for all students," he said.

The United States has 117 historically black colleges and universities, and many offer scholarships to students of all races, Smith said.

"These schools never turn anyone away who wants an education," he said.

The fair will include representatives from Jackson State University in Mississippi, Grambling State University in Louisiana, Alabama A&M in Alabama, Paul Quinn in Dallas and Houston Tillotson in Austin.

Alumni will represent Xavier University in New Orleans, Hampton University in Virginia, Florida A&M, Alcorn State University in Mississippi, Dillard University in New Orleans and Southern University in Louisiana.

Other schools represented by alumni include Jarvis Christian College, Prairie View A&M, and Texas College, all in Texas.

"These colleges and universities have produced some of the most famous black leaders of today," Smith said.

U.S. Representative William Jennings Jefferson was a graduate of Southern University, and Kwame Kiltatrick, the youngest mayor in history of Detroit, is a graduate of Florida A & M.

Many sports figures also have come from these schools, most notably Walter Payton who graduated from Jackson State, Smith said.

"This is a great way to get information about a lot of schools in one place," he said.
