Sports combine with wellness events on NE
by Shannon Harrison, Reporter
A free-throw contest and basketball
league are the first of several wellness games events planned for the
NE Campus this semester.
As part of NEW
U, a wellness program, NE Campus will hold a free-throw contest for NE
students, staff, faculty and administration Friday, Jan. 31, at 12:45
p.m. in the gym.
"This is
a chance for people to get together, meet others and have a good time,"
Dr. Joy Thetford, professor of health, physical education and recreation
said.
Participants
will start with 25 shots at the free throw. Qualifiers will proceed to
the next round with 10 shots. If necessary to break ties, qualifiers will
conclude with five shots each.
Everyone who
competes will receive a prize, Thetford said.
The prizes include
items with the NEW Games logo on them.
Anyone wanting
to sign up for the basketball league can do so 3:30-5:30 p.m. Tuesdays-Thursdays
and 1-3 p.m. Fridays in the gym.
"Everyone
will receive prizes at the end of the league," Thetford said. "Anyone
who is interested in playing full court recreation basketball should come
out and play."
The teams can
sign up with a minimum of seven people and a maximum of 10. Interested
people can sign up either as a team or as an individual, who can be placed
on a team.
The league will
have a bracket style set up with an elimination tournament.
The games will
be played Wednesdays 3:30-5:30 p.m. and Fridays 1-3 p.m. until the league
is finished.
The league will
last three to four weeks depending on how many teams sign up, Thetford
said.
"In the
past when we had intramural programs, not many people participated. We
are hoping more people will become involved in this league and come out
to have a good time," she said.
