TCC PURCHASES RADIOSHACK CORPORATION COMPLEX FOR NEW DOWNTOWN CAMPUS:
Summary and Key Points
Summary
The Tarrant County College District has purchased the RadioShack Corporation complex and will convert it into the college’s new downtown Fort Worth campus. TCC will renovate three of the RadioShack buildings and plans to begin using them for classes in the fall of 2009. The other two buildings will be leased to RadioShack for a period of time. TCC will eventually take over the two other RadioShack buildings as well. In the meantime, ongoing construction on the south side of the river will continue and that building is expected to house the district’s administrative offices, distance learning services, continuing education classes and a conference center. TCC won’t need and won’t build a new structure on the north side of the river. Now the College will have two locations on the river, expanding its presence in the Trinity River area. TCC remains committed to the fast growing and underserved community on the north side of the river and is exploring transportation options to help students from both sides of the river get to the RadioShack complex. All of this will be done with no tax increases, no service decreases and no impact on other TCC campuses.
Key Points
Our new campus will be bigger.
The RadioShack complex, which includes more than a million total square feet will provide us with approximately 929,000 square feet.
Under our original plan, our new constructions on the Trinity River would have only given us 750,000 square feet.
This will give us more space so our thriving college family can continue to grow.
Our new campus will be better.
The RadioShack complex is a state of the art facility already equipped with the latest and best technology and infrastructure.
Many of these features, originally planned in our ongoing downtown construction, have been eliminated due to cost. Now we will have them for our students at our new RadioShack complex.
Our new campus will be ready quicker.
The RadioShack complex is ours. Right now. We will immediately begin a year-long renovation process to convert offices into classrooms in three of the buildings.
In September of 2009, we plan to move in and begin conducting classes and using these buildings. Eventually, we will occupy all of the RadioShack buildings.
Under our original downtown construction plan, we wouldn’t have completed the entire new downtown campus until 2023.
Our new campus will provide cost certainty.
The combined costs of buying and renovating RadioShack and completing the facilities on the south side of the river are the same cost as if we completed our facilities on the north and south sides of the river. With this decision we achieve cost certainty, gain more than 300,000 additional square feet and acquire 1700 additional parking spaces.
