Homemade Construction Tools

  • Visit Picklebums to find out how to use all those empty paper towel and toilet paper rolls to make your own construction tools!

Newspaper Challenge

Get creative: What can you make using only newspaper and tape?

  • What’s the tallest structure you can make?
  • Can you make a shoe? A shirt? A bag?

Involve your whole family and show off your creation.

Spaghetti Tower Challenge

  1. Give everyone 20 pieces of spaghetti, 1 yard of tape, and a marshmallow.
  2. Put 10 minutes on the clock and build the tallest tower you can to support the marshmallow.
  3. At the end of 10 minutes, stop building and hands up.
  4. The tallest tower left standing that can support the marshmallow wins!

Unsinkable Ship

Have loose change lying around?

Challenge your family to the unsinkable boat contest!

  1. Give each person an equal-sized piece of aluminum foil (a good size is 6 inches by 6 inches).
  2. Challenge everyone to build a boat only using that piece of aluminum foil.
  3. Set a time limit or give everyone as much time as they need to be creative.
  4. When time is up, float the boats in a tub of water or the kitchen sink.
  5. Ask each person to start adding change—1 coin at a time—to their boat and see whose boat holds the most weight.
