Prepare for What You Will Do at Work

  • Loan, collect, sort, re-shelve & maintain library materials
  • Use databases to locate library materials
  • Answer routine reference questions, including how to use library resources
  • Perform routine clerical tasks, such as:
    • Registering new patrons & issuing library cards
    • Answering phones
    • Organizing files
  • Help plan & participate in special programs, such as used-book sales, story times, or outreach programs

Before You Enroll, Think About:

  • You may spend quite a bit of your time working with the public at service desks or computer terminals—often standing for extended periods of time.
  • You need to be detail oriented and have strong computer skills.
  • You may spend time in the library stacks re-shelving books, which may require bending or stretching to reach the shelves.
  • Your working hours may vary widely depending on the type of library where you are employed.
  • If you want to become a librarian, most jobs require an accredited master’s degree.
    • You can apply your TCC Library Technician credits toward a 4-year bachelor’s degree of your choosing before applying to graduate school.
