Hazardous Materials
FIRT-2045 HazMat Technician
In Person Only
This course focuses on advanced techniques, covering all levels of personnel protective equipment and emergency response. Topics include weapons of mass destruction, radiation, transportation and fixed facility emergencies. The course will be delivered using a combination of classroom instruction and extensive field exercises.
The Texas Commission of Fire Protection (TCFP) will administer a written exam upon completion of course requirements for state certification. The Department of Homeland Security, Office of Domestic Preparedness will provide you with a certification of Awareness Level training for Weapons of Mass Destruction of Responses at no additional charge.

- An SCBA Certification—recommended

FIRT-2012 HazMat Incident Commander
This class prepares you for the challenging role of HazMat Incident Commander (HMIC) and leads to certification from the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP).
The HMIC is the responsible for:
- All hazardous materials incidents
- Weapon of mass destruction (WMD) incident activities
- Development of strategies and tactics
- Ordering and release of resources
The HMIC is not expected to be able to personally operate the various types of monitoring equipment but is expected to understand the functions and limitations of them and should be able to apply the results of air monitoring and detection in making and or approving decisions pertaining to Control Zones, PPE, Public Protection and other related issues.
According to OSHA and TCFP, the HMIC should meet all the following competencies:
- Awareness Level HazMat
- Operations Level HazMat
- HazMat Incident Commander
Additional skills that must be met by the HMIC are:
- Managing an incident within the incident command system
- Specifically managing a HazMat scene
- Knowledge of each job required at a HazMat incident
- Knowledge and use of a variety of technical readings and resources
During complex incidents involving HazMat technicians or private sector specialists, the HMIC would use their expertise in formulating strategy, IAP, response objectives and action options.

In this course, you will learn to identify and analyze safety concerns and to communicate recommended solutions to the Incident Commander. The class focuses on emergency scenes and the use of the Incident Command System.

Incident Command
Hybrid course: Online & In Person
An Incident Commander is the individual who is responsible for all emergency incident activities, including the development of strategies and tactics and the ordering and release of resources.
This individual has overall authority and responsibility for conducting incident operations and for managing all incident operations at the incident site. The Incident Commander is also responsible for the safe and efficient mitigation of all emergency incidents.
Plan for mandatory in-person meetings the last week of the course (5 days).

If you are taking online courses, we cannot, unfortunately, loan textbooks to you.
