Credit vs. Continuing Education

We offer 2 types of courses: college credit and continuing education.

Explore the benefits of college credit and continuing education courses and see how they differ. You’ll find the resources you need to help you get started on your path.

Whether your goal is to advance your career or to pursue higher education, we have options for you.

What are College Credit Courses?

College credit courses count toward college or university degrees. Each course is measured in semester credit hours. When you pass a course, you earn those credits.

Types of credit courses:

  • Basics/Core Curriculum: General courses that build a foundation for higher education, such as English, math, science, and government. See Core Curriculum for details.
  • Field of Study: A group of courses for the first two years of a bachelor’s degree in a specific major. These courses are designed to transfer and count toward a bachelor’s degree at a Texas college or university. Learn more about Field of Study.
  • Degree-Track Courses & Programs: Courses required for a specific degree or certificate program. Visit Pathways to explore our programs.

See Catalog to find all offered courses and course descriptions.

Developmental Studies

You can start with our developmental studies courses if you are not yet ready for college-level coursework. These courses help you develop your academic skills and be successful in college.

Your transcript will list developmental studies courses, but they are not included in your grade point average (GPA).

What is Continuing Education?

Continuing education (CE) courses do not count toward a college or university degree. However, these courses lead to certificates, industry-recognized credentials, and continuing education units (CEUs). With stackable credentials, you can gain certifications that build on each other and help advance your career.

CE programs are a good option if you want to enter the workforce, change careers, or build skills in a new area. They provide hands-on training you can use on the job right away.

We offer a variety of programs, with courses taught by instructors with real-world experience. No matter your age, background, or goals, we have a program for you.
