Selective Admission: Diagnostic Medical Sonography

Diagnostic Medical Sonography (sonography) is a selective admission program. Applying to TCC does not mean you have applied to the sonography program.

After being accepted to TCC, you must meet the following requirements to be eligible to submit a separate application to our Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program.

Am I eligible to apply?

Check to see that you have met the following eligibility requirements:

Grade Point Average (GPA)

You must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 based on the prerequisite, non-core courses needed for this program.

TCC Student ID Number

You must apply to TCC, be accepted as a student and get a TCC Student ID number before you apply to the sonography program.

Texas Success Initiative (TSI) Requirements

You must meet the TSI requirements for enrolling in college credit courses.

Prerequisite Courses

You must have completed the following 7 prerequisite courses with a grade of "C" or higher before applying to our program.

These biology courses are valid only if completed within 5 years of your application.

Other Disciplines

You are allowed only 2 total attempts at earning your desired grade in these courses to be eligible to apply to Diagnostic Medical Sonography. A withdrawal or drop counts as an attempt.

Performance Requirements

During your time in our program and throughout your career, you must meet performance requirements to ensure patient safety and welfare.

Health Education Systems, Inc. (HESI A2) Admission Exam

HESI A2 is the required admissions exam for the program.

You will be assigned a score of 85 on the HESI A2 for ranking purposes. If you wish to improve upon that score, you may take the HESI A2 and submit higher scores.

The Texas Administrative Code (TAC) and the Dallas-Fort Worth Hospital Council Foundation Community Standards (PDF)Listen require that all students in health-related programs complete the following immunizations before applying to programs where patient contact is a component.

If you know you will be applying to our sonography program within the next year, you will need to start these now because some will take up to 6 months to complete the series.
